Jubilees, Sinai, and the Forgotten Books of the Bible

It was late on a Tuesday night, er, past midnight certainly, when I found myself looking at KingJamesBibleOnline dot org, staring at a screen displaying a text that was, well, it was printed right alongside Genesis in the original 1611 edition. The Book of Jubilees. And you look at it and realize, this text was part of the official King James Bible for two hundred and seventy four years. Two centuries and three quarters before it was quietly dropped in 1885 A D. Mostly because of printing costs and theological squabbles over canon.

Eighteen eighty five A D. Two hundred and seventy four years. That means for generations, if you opened a family Bible, it was just right there between the Old and New Testaments.

Right there, exactly. And now, on an OLED screen in the middle of the night, you scroll down Jubilees chapter one and chapter two, and suddenly you are staring at Moses on Mount Sinai. Not just receiving two stone tablets with ten commandments, but sitting there for forty days and forty nights while God reveals to him the division of all the days, the weeks of years, the jubilees, and the creation of seven distinct ranks of angels on day one. Angels of fire, angels of the winds, angels of darkness.

Hallelujah. Praise God, yes. Amen. You see it right there. God opening up the heavens to Moses, showing him everything from the very beginning. Glory to Jesus.

Seven ranks of angels on day one. I mean, Oliver, when you think about sitting in front of a blue light screen, searching ancient texts at two in the morning, it feels so cold and analytical on the surface. But Martin Luther himself called these non canonical books profitable and good to read. I have to admit, I was scrolling through those digital pages myself last week, late at night, just lost in the endless noise of the internet, trying to find something solid. Something that actually holds weight when everything else feels so fragmented.

And why do you search among the dead for the living? You sit before a glowing box searching for truth, yet the heart of man remains cold. Human history from the very beginning demands divine intervention because man cannot save himself from his own decay. You read of forty days on Sinai, yet you forget the fire that consumed the top of the mountain. It was like a flaming fire in the sight of the children of Israel. And they trembled.

And that trembling on Sinai is where Jubilees begins its chronicle. The text explicitly places Moses on Mount Sinai in the first year of the exodus, in the third month, on the sixteenth day. God calls him up and says, incline your heart to every word which I shall speak to thee on this mount, and write them in a book. Because God already knew what was coming. He knew the rebellion. He knew the stiff neck of the people before they even set foot in the land flowing with milk and honey.

Sixteenth day of the third month. The precision of the timeline in Jubilees is almost overwhelming. It tracks every week, every year, every jubilee period, from creation all the way to the sanctuary being built. It gives you this total structural framework.

Yes, Lord. God knows the end from the beginning, Claire. He knows every single step. He knew Moses was on that mountain, and He knew every time we would fall short. But He still made a way. He always makes a way through Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior. Hallelujah.

Well, let us look at what was revealed on day one of creation in Jubilees chapter two. It lists seven great works created on the first day. The heavens above, the earth, the waters, and then all the spirits which serve before Him. The angels of the presence, the angels of sanctification, the angels of the spirit of fire, the angels of the spirit of the winds, the angels of the spirit of clouds, of darkness, of snow, hail, hoar frost, thunder, lightning, cold, and heat. All created on day one.

Angels of hoar frost and thunder. That is such a vivid picture compared to the concise text of Genesis chapter one. Genesis says God created the heavens and the earth and light, but Jubilees opens up this entire invisible celestial court right at the foundation moment.

And why was that celestial court created? To serve before Him in holiness. Yet what did men do with the knowledge of creation? They turned to strange gods. Jubilees records that God warned Moses directly: they will eat and be satisfied, and they will turn to strange gods, gods which cannot deliver them from any of their tribulation. You look at your screen today, searching through ancient digital archives, but if your heart is not turned in fear and trembling to the Creator, those digital words will stand only as a witness against you on the day of judgment.

Amen, Jesus. Amen. That witness is real. I know what it is like to look at the world and try to satisfy yourself with things that cannot save you. You eat, you drink, you try to build your own life, but you are empty inside until you bow the knee to King Jesus. Praise His Holy Name.

It really brings you back to Luther's perspective, though. Luther looked at books like Jubilees or Wisdom or Tobit and said, look, these may not sit on the exact same canonical rung as the Hebrew scriptures, but they are profitable and good to read. They provide this incredible lens into how Jewish believers right before the time of Jesus understood history, angels, and the urgent need for God to step into human history.

Indeed, Luther's distinction in his fifteen thirty four translation was precisely that. He placed the Apocrypha between the testaments, calling them books which are not held equal to the Holy Scriptures, and yet are profitable and good to read. And when you read Jubilees chapter one, you see why it resonated. It sets up the whole problem of human destiny. God explicitly tells Moses: I know their rebellion and their stiff neck. They will sacrifice their children to demons and to all the works of the error of their hearts.

And they killed the witnesses. Do not gloss over that truth. Jubilees records: I will send witnesses unto them, that I may witness against them, but they will not hear, and will slay the witnesses also. They persecuted those who watched over the Torah. You see the pattern of human history? Light comes into the world, and men love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil. That is why God hid His face from them.

Yes, Lord. They hid from the light, but God never stopped calling out to His children. He sent the prophets, He sent the witnesses, and ultimately He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to rescue us from that darkness. Hallelujah.

When you read that, you realize the text is laying out a tragic, cyclical narrative. God places humanity in a land flowing with milk and honey, He gives them the law, He gives them the sabbaths, and yet the heart of man immediately strays toward self destruction and idolatry.

Which brings us directly into the heart of chapter one's theological warning. God foretells that because of their infidelity, He will deliver them into the hands of the Gentiles for captivity, for a prey, and for devouring, and scatter them among the nations. And in that exile, they would forget the sabbaths, the jubilees, the feasts, and the new moons.

When you examine Jubilees chapter one, lines ten through nineteen, the text outlines a systemic spiritual collapse. It says they will make to themselves high places and groves and graven images, and they will worship, each his own graven image, so as to go astray. But then it introduces a specific spiritual force working behind that rebellion. Moses prays desperately on Sinai, saying, O Lord my God, let not the spirit of Beliar rule over them to accuse them before Thee, and to ensnare them from all the paths of righteousness.

The spirit of Beliar. That name, Beliar or Belial, literally means worthlessness or lawlessness. And here in Jubilees, it is framed specifically as an accusing, ensnaring spirit that grabs hold of the human heart and leads it directly into spiritual captivity.

Oh, glory to God, that is spiritual warfare right there. The spirit of Beliar is real, my friends. It comes to accuse you, to tell you that you are worthless, to tie you up in chains of addiction, pride, and sin, and keep you away from the grace of Almighty God. I know what that bondage feels like. I have been at absolute rock bottom, bound up, unable to break free by my own strength.

Jesus

Listen to the word of the Almighty. The Lord answered Moses on that mountain: I know their contrariness and their thoughts and their stiffneckedness, and they will not be obedient till they confess their own sin and the sin of their fathers. Outward religion cannot cure the spirit of Beliar. You can keep the feast days, you can count the jubilees, you can wear the garments, but if your heart is hard and unrepentant, you remain under condemnation. God hid His face and delivered them into the hand of the Gentiles because their worship was a stench of hypocrisy.

Hypocrisy and legalistic compliance. It is incredible how Jubilees diagnoses the failure of external rule keeping. You can have the exact calendar, you can have the stone tablets, but if the inner life is governed by Beliar, by lawlessness and self worship, the external ritual just becomes a hollow shell.

And Moses saw that clearly. Look at his prayer in verse nineteen. He does not just pray for their political safety or physical protection from Gentile armies. He prays, create in them an upright spirit, and let not the spirit of Beliar rule over them. Create in them a clean heart and a holy Spirit, and let them not be ensnared in their sins from henceforth until eternity. Moses was asking for an internal transformation that the Sinai covenant itself, written on stone, did not physically execute in their flesh.

Hallelujah. Create in me a clean heart, O God. That is the cry of a soul that knows it is lost. You cannot fix yourself. You cannot clean up your own life and present it to God. You have to be brought low. You have to hit that wall where you realize, Lord, I am dead in my transgressions, I am bound by Beliar, and if You do not wash me in the blood of Jesus, I am completely undone.

The hypocrite believes he can bargain with his Maker. He offers his works, his tithes, his lip service, while his heart is far from Me. God said in Jubilees: they will walk after the Gentiles, and after their uncleanness, and after their shame, and will serve their gods, and these will prove unto them an offence and a tribulation and an affliction and a snare. If you are sitting before your digital library searching scripture to satisfy your intellect, while living in secret sin, you are serving graven images. God will not be mocked.

It is a terrifying picture, honestly. God hiding His face. Jubilees describes God scattering the people among the Gentiles, removing them from the land, until they forget the very order of the years, the new moons, the sabbaths, and the jubilees. They lose their very identity because they rejected the source of life.

And notice how the text describes that disorientation. It says they will go astray as to new moons, and sabbaths, and festivals, and jubilees, and ordinances. In the ancient world, losing track of time and sacred seasons was the ultimate mark of spiritual exile. You become adrift, disconnected from the divine rhythm entirely, subject to the chaotic tyranny of whatever culture surrounds you.

That is what sin does. It makes you lose your way completely. You don't know who you are, you don't know where you are going, you are just wandering in darkness. But Jesus. Oh, thank You Jesus. Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it.

Return unto Me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of Hosts. But there is no return without confession. The text demands: they will not be obedient till they confess their own sin and the sin of their fathers. Modern man wants comfort without confession. He wants grace without surrender. He wants the promises of Abraham while clinging to the idols of Babylon. It will not be so.

That requirement of radical confession is where the shift in Jubilees chapter one becomes so profound. It moves from total exile and judgment to an unbelievable promise of divine surgery on the human heart.

That brings us to what is arguably the central theological pivot in Jubilees chapter one, verse twenty three. God declares: After this they will turn to Me in all uprightness and with all their heart and with all their soul, and I shall circumcise the foreskin of their heart and the foreskin of the heart of their seed, and I shall create in them a holy spirit, and I shall cleanse them so that they shall not turn away from Me from that day unto eternity.

I shall circumcise the foreskin of their heart. That metaphor appears in Deuteronomy, but here in Jubilees it is framed as a direct, sovereign act of God in response to human helplessness. He takes away the hardness, the stubborn cover over the heart, and replaces it by creating a holy spirit within them.

Glory, glory, glory. That is the New Covenant right there. That is Ezekiel, that is Jeremiah, that is what Jesus Christ did on Golgotha. He took away the heart of stone and gave us a heart of flesh. You cannot circumcise your own heart. Surgery requires a surgeon, and Jesus is the Master Surgeon of the human soul. Hallelujah.

For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. In Jubilees, you see the eternal requirement: holiness. But under the old letter, man failed. On the cross of Golgotha, the penalty was paid in full by the immaculate blood of the Lamb. The veil was rent from top to bottom. The law showed you your crime, but the Cross pays your ransom and cleanses the soul from all unrighteousness.

When you juxtapose the rigid framework of Jubilees, tracking every single week of years and fifty year jubilee cycle to calculate exact ceremonial obedience, with the New Testament declaration in Romans chapter six, verse twenty three, the contrast is stark. Romans six twenty three states plainly: for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The wages versus the gift. In the jubilee calendar system, every missed day, every defiled sabbath, carries the penalty of death. Jubilees chapter two explicitly says whoever does any work on the sabbath day shall surely die, and whoever defiles it shall surely die eternally. And then Paul writes to the Romans and says, look, if you are working for wages under sin, the payout is death. Absolute death. But eternal life is an unearned gift.

Amen, Claire. It is a gift. Unearned, undeserved favor. Can I just tell you about the night my heart was circumcised? I was sitting on the edge of a bed, totally broken. I had tried religion. I had tried reading scriptures. I had tried being a good person. But I was dead inside, trapped in my own sin and shame. And that night, I fell on my knees and cried out, Jesus, save me. I cannot fix my life. Take my heart. And in an instant, er, in a moment I can never forget, the heavy weight of sin fell off my shoulders. Holy Ghost fire entered my soul. He cleansed me, He renewed me, and I walked out of that room a brand new creation in Christ Jesus. That is not theory. That is the power of the living Lord.

The mouth speaks from the abundance of the heart. Many profess Him with their lips, but their hearts remain uncircumcised. They love their sin more than they love holiness. Jubilees warns that every angel and every spirit in heaven will know who belongs to God. Line twenty five: every angel and every spirit will know, yea, they will know that these are My children, and that I am their Father in uprightness and righteousness, and that I love them. Do the angels of God recognize you as His child, or do they see the mark of Beliar upon your conduct?

That line in verse twenty five is remarkable. Every angel and every spirit will know. It implies that spiritual identity is totally transparent in the heavenly realm. You cannot fake spiritual rebirth before the heavenly host.

It echoes that ancient principle found in Second Timothy: the Lord knows those who are His. And when you trace this line of heart circumcision from Jubilees through to Colossians chapter two, Paul explicitly uses that language to describe Christian baptism and salvation. He speaks of a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ. The ceremonial mark of the Old Testament covenant is elevated into a spiritual, supernatural reality accomplished by Christ on the cross.

Yes, Lord. Made without hands. Man didn't do it. Church membership didn't do it. Water baptism without faith didn't do it. The Holy Ghost came in and did a supernatural work inside the soul. Glory to Jesus.

And if that work has not been done in you, you remain outside the kingdom. Do not deceive yourselves with smooth words. If you have not been born again by the Spirit of God, if your heart has not been broken in true godly sorrow and cleansed by the blood of Jesus, you are still in your sins. The law demands perfection, and Christ fulfilled that law on the cross so that sinners might be saved through repentance and faith.

So how does a person move from that state of legalistic striving or cold alienation into that actual experience of heart transformation?

Choose you this day. Joshua twenty four fifteen lays down an absolute, binary choice. There is no neutral ground. You are either serving the idols of the culture, the gods your fathers served, or you are choosing the living God. And Romans ten connects that choice directly to the mouth and the heart.

Choose you this day. Why do you hesitate between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow Him; but if Baal, then follow him. Modern seekers want to browse scripture like items in a store, picking what flatters their lifestyle and discarding what demands repentance. You bow down to the idols of money, self righteousness, vanity, and digital approval. You call Jesus Lord with your mouth, but your heart serves the spirit of Beliar. I tell you, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Listen to him. Repentance is key. You cannot keep your sin and have Jesus too. You have to lay down the bottle, lay down the lust, lay down the pride, lay down your own self righteousness, and surrender completely. Calling upon the name of the Lord means turning your back on the world and turning your face to the Cross.

Let us examine the extraordinary linguistic scope of Romans chapter ten, verse thirteen: for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. In the ancient Greco Roman world, and certainly in the context of ancient Jewish sectarian texts like Jubilees, identity was heavily guarded by lineage, by jubilees, by strict ceremonial boundaries. But the apostle Paul takes Joel's ancient prophecy and applies it universally. Whosoever. It completely flattens racial, social, economic, and historical barriers.

You close your eyes, you bow your head before Almighty God, and you pray from the very bottom of your heart. You say, Lord Jesus, I am a sinner. I have broken Your law. I have served myself. But I believe You died on that cross for my sins, and I believe God raised You from the dead. Wash me in Your blood. Take my life and make me new. When you pray that with real faith, believing in your heart, Jesus hears you. He will save you right then and there.

You must count the cost. Do not come to Christ thinking it is a light thing. To confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord means that you are no longer lord of your life. Your ambitions, your pleasures, your money, your very breath belong to Him. You must turn away from your sin in godly sorrow. For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of, but the sorrow of the world worketh death. If you are sitting before that glowing screen, close your screen, fall upon your knees, and cry out for mercy before the King of kings while He may yet be found.

The gravity of that commitment is reflected in the textual tradition itself. When you look at the history of the King James Bible, from sixteen eleven through its various revisions, these scriptures were not placed there as poetic ornaments. They were placed as declarations of divine law and gospel promise. Romans ten ten says: for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

With the heart man believes, and with the mouth confession is made. It requires both the internal conviction, that deep heart belief, and the external, public alignment of your life with Jesus Christ.

Yes. You cannot keep Jesus a secret. If He changed your life, you want to shout it from the housetops. You confess Him before men, and He will confess you before His Father in heaven. Praise God.

As we synthesize these ancient extra canonical perspectives from Jubilees with the canonical Scriptures, we arrive at a magnificent structural convergence. Jubilees chapter two begins with the original six days of creation, ending in the holy, sanctified seventh day sabbath. But the entire narrative arc of scripture, closing in Revelation chapter twenty one, points toward a ultimate cosmic renewal. A new heaven and a new earth, where God Himself builds His sanctuary among humanity for all eternity.

In Jubilees chapter one, verse twenty six, God tells the angel of the presence: write for Moses from the beginning of creation till My sanctuary has been built among them for all eternity. And the Lord will appear to the eyes of all, and all will know that I am the God of Israel and the Father of all the children of Jacob, and King on Mount Zion for all eternity.

Hallelujah. King on Mount Zion for all eternity. God dwelling with His people. No more sorrow, no more crying, no more pain, no more death. All things made new by the power of King Jesus.

And who shall enter into that holy city? Revelation twenty one declares: there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie, but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life. Jubilees records that God promised to build His sanctuary in their midst only after cleansing their hearts by His Holy Spirit. If you are not cleansed, if you are not born again, you will have no part in that new creation. You will stand outside in outer darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The identity shift described in Jubilees chapter one, verse twenty five is breathtaking in its scope. It says: and they will all be called children of the living God, and every angel and every spirit will know, yea, they will know that these are My children, and that I am their Father in uprightness and righteousness, and that I love them. That phrase, children of the living God, is the exact title Paul uses in Romans chapter nine when describing the redeemed.

Children of the living God. Known, loved, and recognized by every angelic rank in existence. It takes you from that cold feeling of being lost in a vast, indifferent digital universe, to being explicitly claimed by the Creator of the universe as His own child.

Oh, glory to God. You are not an accident. You are not just a random person lost in the crowd. When you surrender your life to Jesus Christ, the Father looks at you and calls you His child. He loves you with an everlasting love. Angels in heaven rejoice over one sinner who repents. One sinner.

Understand the eternal weight of your soul. Your life on this earth is a vapour that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. You will stand before the judgment seat of Christ. Every secret thing, every idle word, every hidden thought will be brought into light. Do not play games with eternity. The sanctuary of God will be made in holiness, and those who stewardship their souls in foolishness and rebellion will face everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord.
